STILL ADVANCE PRESENTS A CATHERINE BREILLAT VOLATILE VALENTINES DOUBLE BILL…

This young film club with an analogue fetish presents two films by the French director Catherine Breillat.

Past films Romance, Fat Girl and Bluebeard, highlight one of the most provocative and divisive filmmakers in European cinema: in Virgin and Brief Crossing, Breillat explores sexuality, romance, gender conflict and the coming of age experience through the guise of the teen holiday romance. One is from the perspective of a teenage girl, the other from that of an adolescent boy.

Virgin is centred on Lili, on a caravan holiday with her family, still realising her powers over men. Intent on losing her virginity, she latches onto an ageing playboy, but soon finds their relationship is developing into something emotionally warped and troublingly complex.

Brief Crossing charts the dalliance between Thomas and a troubled older English woman, who he meets after boarding a ferry from La Havre to Portsmouth. Knowing that they are only on board together for a short time, as they learn more about each other, the shifts in balance that occur between the two threaten to disrupt their relationship.

From one of the leading figures behind New French Extremity, Breillat turns the myths of love inside out.

“A master of psychosexual and Freudian mind-fuckery” – Little White Lies

“So fresh and incisive, so poignant yet funny, that Virgin’s coming-of-age story unfolds as if it were the first of its kind” – Los Angeles Times

Doors 11pm – 2.30am

@ Rio Cinema

Violent, deranged, piercing, and brilliant, Cigarette Burns is proud to present: ROBOCOP.

Although famed for their cult cinema screenings, Cigarette Burns are bringing you a perfect late-night 80s gem. Here’s what they have to say about it…

We at Cigarette Burns always delight in bringing you obscure, curious and awesome nuggets from the nether reaches of genre cinema, and it’s rare that we’ll screen a film that your mother will have heard of.

If we were ever going to break our own rules it’d be for this man, however: tell your mother to clear her schedule on the 21st January, because ROBOCOP is coming to the Rio Cinema, Dalston. An unsurpassed blend of satire, police drama, exploitation and sci-fi, this is a film so good it requires a statue…

As usual we’ll have the Flashback DJs spinning celluloid flavoured classics before and after the film, and our friends at Psychotronic will be selling DVDs, books, and many more items of wallet-tempting cult ephemera.

The film starts around 11.30pm, with the bar staying open throughout the film until 2.30am.
