I Don’t Have Time for This: Hattie Stewart at Now Gallery until 25 June 2018

Visionary artist/illustrator Hattie Stewart’s very first commission that celebrates the best rising talent in the fields of visual arts and illustration. The gallery invites Stewart into the space to explore her vision as part of its on-going dedication to showcasing one-off experimental art and design. ❤️ 😉

Commissioned by Kaia Charles, NOW Gallery’s Cultural Curator, this new exhibition of Stewart’s work will allow the viewer the opportunity to engage with it like never before. Fully immersive, I Don’t Have Time For This invites viewers to participate intimately with Stewart’s legendary doodle-bombing illustrations, becoming part of an illustrated fantasy world that results in a short and memorable break from reality.

The crux of the exhibition is a bold, escapist, large scale floor- based artwork that invites the viewer to make time. Recline, look up and cross over into Stewart’s fictional universe. Made up of Stewart’s subversive style references; psychedelic art of the 60’s and the comic absurdity of hybrid post-modern classics like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, this large scale installation features a mix of characters, patterns and galaxies, giving the feeling that the artwork is alive. Through densely packed mirrored illustrative detail, the viewer will be able to float in space, lie in a field of flowers and even ‘fly’.

In recent years Stewart’s notoriety has increased due to her personal project titled ‘doodle-bombing’ where she draws over the covers of influential publications such as Interview, Vogue, i:D and Playboy. Part homage and part satire, this ongoing personal project has formed the basis for most of her commercial projects and endeavours, avoiding a more conventional illustrative style. Stewart’s work is bold and experimental in application and sees her breaking boundaries within the field of illustration.

I Don’t Have Time For This marks the debut of NOW Gallery Young Artist programme, which aims to work with artists who have an unusual approach and standout visual aesthetic, to create a unique vision for the gallery space. As part of the on-going regeneration of Greenwich Peninsula, this programme underpins the area’s commitment to fostering creativity to build a sense of place and community, offering a blank canvas that allows those who visit and settle a chance to imagine, create and build; an opportunity to create a new London.

Since graduating from Kingston University in 2010, Hattie has created a varied portfolio having worked with creatives such as Roman Coppola and for artists like SZA, Ariana Grande and Kylie Minogue. With a vibrant, tongue in cheek visual identity, she is a self-proclaimed ‘professional doodler’ with a unique and playful illustration style that extends itself fluidly through the worlds of advertising, art and fashion. She has worked with varied clients including but not limited to – MTV, Hunter, House of Holland, Nike, Apple Music, Marc by Marc Jacobs, MAC Cosmetics, Pepsi, and Adidas. She also recently launched her very own Doodlebomb sticker book – allowing others to decorate their lives as she does her own.

Harmonics in Space: Fred Butler at NOW Gallery until 29 April 2018

Welcome to Fred Butler’s therapeutic world. For NOW Gallery’s Design Commission Fred has created a joyful destination for healing with light, colour, shape and sound. In this environment she explores chromotherapy and light as an antidote to SAD – seasonal defective disorder – and to our urban living. 🌈 ✨ 🌈

SHAPE
Fred’s on-going interest in wellbeing led her to discover Rudolph Laban’s theory ‘Harmonics in Space’ of how our bodies are formed of polyhedral shapes within the environment. The first and smallest of the polyhedral is the tetrahedron, located at the centre. Vibrations here are closely related to breathing and our intense awareness of being alive. Fred believes that through constant computer work and hunching over devices, this tetrahedron gets blocked. Take this opportunity to stand, breath and expand your chests to recharge the whole body to be responsive.

COLOUR
“We need a balance of all the colour vibrations in sunlight to nourish us energetically”. As with shape Fred believes that colour has a profound affect on our moods, emotions and daily life. This immersive installation will give you the opportunity to step away from the grey of everyday into the full spectrum.

LIGHT
Dip your head into a polyhedral to encounter healing light. These shapes relate in concentric order, and form harmonic structures in the gallery. This environment offers an interplay between the conscious and unconscious levels of the psyche, stimulating the imagination and releasing creativity.

MAKE
Take time to make origami. We have an exclusive colourful mystic mascot to match your mood. Give yourself creative space to switch off, contemplate and make. Decorate your cosmic creature and keep as a magic memento of your day.

LISTEN
Headphones are available to experience a sonic journey by Natureboy created for the exhibition. He combines live instrumentation, synthesizers and his own voice in a series of rich, reflective and detailed compositions. The contrasting tempos, textures and moods reflect the many facets of Fred Butler’s exploration of the senses. “Music Heals”

BE
This exhibition is about looking after you. It’s inclusiveness addresses Fred’s concern about the future of human nature becoming introverted, isolated and immobile. Let go of instant gratification from constant scrolling and over stimulation which shortens attention span. Enjoy the moment, forget the past, don’t speculate the future be in the NOW.

The Come Up by Charles Jeffrey at NOW Gallery until 11 February 2018

Charles Jeffrey, the Glaswegian designer, illustrator and creative, is NOW Gallery’s third fashion commission. Charles’ first solo exhibition, THE COME UP will be an interactive and three-dimensional representation of the Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY brand and cult club night.

Based around Charles’ renowned illustrations, THE COME UP will explore these artworks amplified via new media. Showcased in a three-dimensional format, the exhibition will act as a manifestation of Charles’ mind. Charles’ emotive and vibrant illustrations will be interpreted afresh through large sculptural pieces that will hang from the gallery’s seven-meter ceiling. The sculptures will be a mix of PVC, fibreglass, chicken wire with papier-mache, and electrical tape, varying greatly in size.

As part of the installation, a series of shelves filled with mixed media artistic materials will be the setting of an interactive experience that will invite visitors to open up their alter egos and let creativity take over. Starting with a representation from Charles himself, the installation provides an opportunity for the visiting community to progress the structural artwork until it is complete. This relates back to a signature part of Charles’ illustrative work – repeated faces – as at the end, the installation will become a physical representation and exploration of the realm of identities and many faces who have been welcomed into the gallery to interact with THE COME UP, much like those who attend a LOVERBOY club night.

Renowned digital print designer Camille Walala is showcasing her work as the gallery’s 2017 Design Collaborator with an interactive abstract installation and immersive maze.

Visitors are welcomed to explore, examine and enjoy a labyrinthine network of corridors and enclosed spaces in a ‘temple of wonder’ created by Walala Studio. A key part of this installation will be an imaginative puzzle which invites the solver to identify the inconsistencies between two otherwise identical images. WALALA x PLAY brings this concept off the page and into three- dimensional space, inviting visitors to linger and explore colour, shape and scale, contemplating formidable pattern to find the differences.

The anomalies and asymmetries will generally be discreetly positioned, requiring visitors to scrutinize the space from all angles to complete the puzzle. Secret spots will be found when looking down from the balcony or looking up at the suspended elements. This element of physicality will encourage individuals to become more aware of their bodies, engage their minds and give themselves over to PLAY.

Visitors are encouraged to pass through the gallery and experience a range of spaces, some open, some tight and uncomfortable, some with dead ends. With walls of different heights, passageways of different widths, curved and zigzag paths, the installation addresses the idea of human scale. It ensures that visitors leave with not only a visual impression of the installation, but transformed by the experience of their own passage through it.

Mirrored panels reflect the space back on itself; suspended shapes introduce a feeling of lightness and playful disorientation – the installation is a journey that will challenge, reward and engage the visitor in equal measure.

The waterways of the Greenwich Peninsula, the curve of the Thames, and the internal shapes and angles of the Marks Barfield buildings are referenced and represented in the ideas of flow and reflection that define WALALA x PLAY. The layout of the installation playfully mirrors the shape of the building. The gallery sets the template for the flow of the space.

Two unique ping pong tables are available in the Peninsula Garden. Get a bat and ball from NOW Gallery reception and play a WALALA game of ping pong.
