While in Tokyo in 2001, photographer Lyle Owerko found a mint late-seventies Victor JVC at an outdoor market. Having already been a collector, his hunt began for more rare and obscure models. Beloved by rappers, b-boys, dancers, political protestors, and punks, a siren call to gather and dance, the boombox reminds us of when music was a collective experience and the street was a club. Owerko spent years collecting and photographing a remarkable set of vintage boomboxes, resulting in an arresting, unexpected photoseries of these cult objects.
The Boombox Project: The Machines, The Music, and The Urban Underground, featuring a introduction by Spike Lee. This is the first time the full exhibition will be on public display in the UK.
The Dead Will Rise double bill, featuring THE BEYOND and DEAD & BURIED
Pioneering cult film, Cigarette Burns Cinema is the perfect underground cinematic alternative. ‘Returning forgotten and obscure cult classics to the cinema screens of London’ is what they do and this awesome double bill does just that: bringing Lucio Fulci’s occult film THE BEYOND and Dan O’ Bannon’s zombie movie DEAD & BURIED to one of London’s best independent cinemas.
And if you’re gearing up for Film4 FrightFest, this will be a lovely appetizer before the bank-holiday weekend of genre films.
The Beyond will start at 8pm, Dead & Buried will start at 9.50pm. Tickets can be bought individually to see a single film here:
Midnight Movies & Momentum Pictures celebrate the release of the hugely anticipated, cult-film-in-the-making HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN by hosting the London Premiere and director Q&A at east London’s venue XOYO with live music acts, exhibition and Olly Dixon (Filthy Dukes) DJ set.
Director Jason Eisener will take part in a Q&A (hosted by Paul McEvoy of Frightfest) and introduce the film that originated as an award-winning ‘fake’… trailer for Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse, and became an internet sensation via YouTube. Starring Rutger Hauer (Blade Runner) in the title role, Hobo With A Shotgun is a full-on, noholds-barred tour-de-force of gratuitous violence, gore and bloody mayhem inspired by exploitation movie classics of the 1970s and 80s.
