Film blog Permanent Plastic Helmet presents a special summer screening of Spike Lee’s incendiary classic DO THE RIGHT THING. Don’t miss a rare opportunity to see this unforgettable blend of style, comedy, drama and music on the big screen. This promises to be an undeniably good night with classic 80s hip-hop and soul in the bar before the film, and a special prize giveaway.

It’s the hottest day of the year in Brooklyn, and tensions are rising in the ghetto, where the only businesses are a Korean grocery and Sal’s Pizzeria. Mookie, Sal’s delivery boy, always manages to be at the centre of the action. Spike Lee’s incendiary slice of contemporary New York street life was a sensation upon its release, with its dazzlingly confident visual style and razor-sharp observations of the always contentious race relations in the ultimate American melting pot. DO THE RIGHT THING was also the calling card for Lee, a film that would assure his place amongst the most important filmmakers of his generation.

While in Tokyo in 2001, photographer Lyle Owerko found a mint late-seventies Victor JVC at an outdoor market. Having already been a collector, his hunt began for more rare and obscure models. Beloved by rappers, b-boys, dancers, political protestors, and punks, a siren call to gather and dance, the boombox reminds us of when music was a collective experience and the street was a club. Owerko spent years collecting and photographing a remarkable set of vintage boomboxes, resulting in an arresting, unexpected photoseries of these cult objects.

The Boombox Project: The Machines, The Music, and The Urban Underground, featuring a introduction by Spike Lee. This is the first time the full exhibition will be on public display in the UK.
